10 Day Itinerary for Ghana
Arrive in Accra, Ghana. You will be met at the airport by your guide who will assist you with your transfer from the airport to your hotel. Enjoy a welcome drink at the hotel and participate in an orientation session. Dressmakers will take measurements and sew clothes for interested participants. Overnight at hotel.
After breakfast, depart for a sightseeing tour of Accra, the Capital of Ghana. Experience the city's highlights during this Accra orientation. The capital of Ghana since 1877, Accra is also the capital of the Greater Accra Region. In addition, it's the country's most populous city. Travel through the administrative and economic districts of Accra. Also, see the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Pan African Culture and the Independence/Black Star Square. Learn about important events in Ghana's history and the country's first president who helped lead Ghana to independence. Continue to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to the legacy of Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, and his role in African independence. The tour includes visits to Nkrumah's mausoleum, a museum showcasing his life, his personal residence, the eternal Flame of African Liberation, and beautifully landscaped gardens. End the day at the Arts Center where you can sharpen your bargaining skills at the open-air market and take a walking tour of old Jamestown, the heart of British Accra.
After breakfast, depart for Aburi Botanical Gardens. Set up in 1890, the Aburi Botanical Gardens offers a rich collection of tropical flora that attracts many birds and butterflies. The tranquil surroundings make it a popular getaway for city dwellers. Continue to Oboadaka Waterfalls, where you will experience the beauty of nature as you watch the water flow down the rocks into a cool, clear pool. Return to Accra for the night.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Empire. Visit the Manhyia Palace Museum, which provides a glimpse into the history and traditions of the Ashanti people. Then, head to the craft villages including Ahwiaa (wood carving village), Ntonso (Adinkra cloth stamping village), and Bonwire (Kente weaving village) to observe traditional Ghanaian craftsmanship.
Depart for Cape Coast. En route, visit Assin Manso, the site of "Donkor Nsuo" (Slave River), where captured Africans had their last bath in African waters before being taken to the castles. Continue to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for an emotional tour through the dungeons where enslaved Africans were kept before their journey through the "Door of No Return." Visit the West African Historical Museum located within the castle.
Visit the Elmina fishing village to see the vibrant local industry. Continue to Elmina Castle (St. George's Castle), the first European building in sub-Saharan Africa, built by the Portuguese in 1482. Later, participate in a traditional African head-wrapping session and learn the cultural significance of the various styles.
Experience the beauty of the rainforest at Kakum National Park. Choose between a guided nature walk or the world-famous canopy walkway, suspended 40 meters above the forest floor. Return to Accra and visit Makola Market, the largest and busiest open-air market in the city, where you can find everything from textiles to fresh produce.
Enjoy a day of rest or explore the city at your own pace. There is an optional activity for a traditional waterfall massage, a unique and relaxing experience designed to rejuvenate the body and mind.
Visit Torgorme village, located on the banks of the Volta River. Meet the chief and elders and participate in a traditional naming ceremony where you will be given a Ghanaian name. Witness traditional drumming and dancing. Later, visit a bead factory to see how beautiful beads are made from recycled glass, an important part of Ghanaian culture.
Spend the morning at leisure for last-minute shopping or packing. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
