8 Day Itinerary for Ghana
Your journey begins as you arrive in Accra, the bustling and vibrant capital of Ghana. After a smooth immigration process, you will be assisted with your luggage and transferred to your accommodation. Participate in an orientation session about your upcoming adventure. A seamstress and money changer will be available for interested participants.
Set out for a full-day exploration of Accra, a city that blends modernity with rich history. Start at the W.E.B. Du Bois Center, learning about the influential African-American scholar who spent his final years in Ghana. Visit Independence Square and the Artiste Alliance Gallery. Continue to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the Arts Center. Conclude with a walking tour of old Jamestown, witnessing the historic lighthouse and the local fishing community.
Journey to a cocoa farm in Suhum. Experience a hands-on tour where you will learn about the cultivation of cocoa, the backbone of Ghana's economy. See the harvesting and fermentation processes. Later, visit a chocolate production facility to see how the beans are transformed into delicious chocolate, ending with a tasting session.
Participate in a hands-on Shea Butter workshop. Learn the traditional methods used by Ghanaian women to extract shea butter from the nuts. You will have the opportunity to make your own jar of butter. In the afternoon, relax at Labadi Beach, Accra's most popular beach, known for its lively atmosphere.
Depart for the Central Region. Visit the Assin Manso Slave River, where enslaved Africans had their last bath before being transported to the coast. Continue to Cape Coast Castle for a somber and educational tour of the dungeons and the "Door of No Return," reflecting on the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Visit Kakum National Park and walk across the canopy walkway for a bird's-eye view of the tropical rainforest. In the afternoon, join a culinary class where you will learn to prepare traditional Ghanaian dishes, such as Jollof rice or Waakye, followed by a communal dinner.
Travel to Kumasi, the cultural capital of Ghana. Visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn about the Ashanti monarchy. Explore the Kejetia Market, the largest open-air market in West Africa, a maze of stalls selling everything imaginable.
Spend the morning visiting the Ashanti craft villages: Ahwiaa, Ntonso, and Bonwire. Interact with local artisans as they demonstrate wood carving, Adinkra cloth stamping, and the intricate weaving of Kente cloth. Return to Accra for your final departure transfer.
